Certification of Translations

The EducationUSA Belgium & Luxembourg office can certify translation of educational documents as well as copies of original diplomas.

You can either have the translation done by an official translator or you can prepare your own English translation of each document in a Word .doc. You can then this Word document to us by email together with a scan of the original documents. After examining the original documents, our staff will check and edit the text, if necessary. Because this is an extra service, please allow additional time for the staff to review and edit your translations. Once the translations have been corrected, we will notify you and will set up an appointment for you to come by our office. Please bring with you the original documents and we will certify each copy with a stamp. There will be a charge of 20 euros for an initial certification of translations and an additional 2 euros per page for additional copies. The certification of an original diploma is free of charge.

We recommend that you follow these guidelines for translation:

  • Use literal translations.
  • Follow the layout and format of the original document as closely as possible (do not add or remove columns, etc…)
  • Include all information as it appears on the original document
  • Do NOT try to convert anything into American terms. The points should be left in the Belgian system (e.g. 16/20) and do NOT convert to American terms such as ‘B’ or ‘A+’.
  • Write dates correctly.
    • Born on 9th June / on 9 June 1980 / on June 9, 1980 / on June 9th, 1980 are all correct.
    • Do NOT write ‘on the 1st of August 2001’.
  • Do NOT translate degree or certificate names such as ‘candidature/kandidatuur’ and licence/licentie’ into ‘Bachelor’s’ and ‘Master’s’
  • Please, respect the following rules:
    • voldoening / satisfaction = satisfaction
    • onderscheiding / distinction = distinction
    • 16/20 = 16/20
    • kandidatuur (NL) or candidature (FR) = candidature
    • licentie (NL) or licence (FR) = licence

Again, you will have to make a translation of your academic documents yourself.  We will not make the translations, we will only check and edit them.
