Whether we recognize it or not, gender plays a significant role in shaping our academic environment. In class at Mount Holyoke, I don’t have to argue with the guy who is “just playing devil’s advocate” or worry that my classmates will call me expletives for being outspoken.
Juggling a part-time job with a full-time education can be difficult, but it is also extremely rewarding. It has helped me during my college career by teaching me time management, assisting me financially, and giving me invaluable work experience that will prove helpful for life after college.
One of the most important parts of the college application process is “finding the right fit.” But while it is important to figure out what college or university is the best fit for you, the process doesn’t stop once you arrive on campus in the fall. Participating in student clubs and organizations can help you to find your fit on campus!
What does it mean to attend a Jesuit school? This answer will not be the same for everyone, but for me, the biggest way I see the Jesuit philosophy at SCU is in its people. The core curriculum, residence life, centers of distinction, and the Jesuits themselves all promote a culture that encourages thinking for yourself and using that ability to give back to those who need it most.
Being first-gen is simply another part of the college experience; in the same way that some students come from across the country (or world) or some students speak another language, each component only adds to the complexity that makes up a person’s life at university.
